This is a highly textured painting of the starboard stern of the SS United States as viewed from a sailboat on the Delaware River. When I first saw the ship, I was only able to peer at it through a chain-link fence across a tarmac, and I wished that I had a friend who had a boat so that I could go get a closer look. It turned out that one of my students was a sailor, and she took me to take pictures. I think of photography as a way of taking notes, and this painting is a mental composite of memory and several different photos.
