This is a highly textured painitng of the windbreak, a transitional space between the outside promenade deck and the interior of the ship. It prevents wind and precipitation from blowing straight inside when people enter and exit. The crack on the floor shows where the aluminum superstructure joins to the steel portions of the ship. The innovation of making part of the ship aluminum decreased its weight, which is part of what made it so speedy. The SS United States is currently berthed across from the Ikea in South Philadelphia.
